Suir Dragon Paddlers are committed to helping and supporting breast cancer survivors in the community. Dr. Donald McKenzie in Canada challenged the concept that women with breast cancer could not do moderate or intense shoulder exercises after having surgery.
One of the founders and coaches of the Suir Dragon Boat club is Dr. Castineira who specializes in breast pathology. He learned from Dr. Donald McKenzie’s research that dragon boat paddling activities help to strengthen the upper body, that is affected by breast cancer surgery and can create an environment that supports the processes that help with the emotional, social and mental health recovery.
This type of sport combines upper body exercise, teamwork, support, general well-being and fun.
Our aims include:
▪ Raising awareness of breast cancer.
▪ Increasing opportunities for physical activity and therefore improving health and well-being.
▪ Enjoying mutual support from others diagnosed with breast cancer.
